Scouting the upperclassmen: Jarvis Jones
Jarvis Jones is ETSU’s version of Robert Horry. Dubbed “Big Shot Bob” after several key NBA playoff game-winning shots, Horry was well known for late game heroics. Like Horry, Jones has a penchant for taking and making the final shot, burying two game-winners during this tenure with ETSU: at Charlotte on 1/22/11 and at Lipscomb on 1/21/10. Jones, the sweet-shooting, likeable southpaw from Memphis, has embraced the pressure of the final shot.
In addition to clutch shooting, Jarvis has stepped up his defense in a big way last year, to be a significant part of one of the top teams in steals in D1 basketball, averaging 1.1 per game. The Bucs need improved shooting, and one of the best prospects to provide it is Jarvis. He was an effective catch and shoot 3 point shooter last year, hitting 36-100 for .360. But he didn’t find enough scoring opportunities, averaging 5.9 points in 20.9 minutes of action. He’s got the athleticism and remarkable jumping ability to be more. Here’s hoping for an expanded offensive game, with more penetration and scoring off the dribble. And for more consistency. He had 6 double figure games last year, but too many other games with only 2 or 3 points, and 3 games with no points at all.
