Highlights from ETSU’s exciting 59 -57 win against Charleston Southern last night, including John Walton’s game winning shot.
The 1990-1991 East Tennessee State basketball team started the 90-91 season on a high note with a win against BYU in the first round of the 1990 preseason NIT in Provo, Utah. This particular game is notable for several reasons. First, it was the first game that coach Alan LeForce served as a full-time head coach for ETSU and it also ended up being his first win. Secondly, it’s also the first game of one of the most memorable seasons in East Tennessee State basketball history, the Bucs would end up winning a school record 28 games in the 90-91 season and was ranked in the top 25 nearly all season long. Lastly, this was actually the first collegiate game for 7’6 BYU center Shawn Bradley, who ended up having an 11 year career in the NBA, playing most notably for Philadelphia and Dallas.
Below is the full game between ETSU and BYU. It was a close hard fought game on both sides, with ETSU leading most of the way thanks to great shooting from the 3-point line. Greg Dennis struggled quite a bit in guarding Shawn Bradley but that can be expected when you have to guard someone 7 inches taller than you the whole game. The Bucs would go on to face 5th ranked Arizona in the second round of the NIT, in what turned out to be a preview of ETSU’s 1992 NCAA tournament opponent. Even though ETSU is no longer in the Southern Conference one of our biggest rivals to me and to many other ETSU fans will always be Appalachian State. The two campuses are only separated by 55 miles of mountainous curvy roads and have been playing each other since 1928. ETSU holds an overwhelming lead in the series but that never diminished the rivalry. Anytime the two teams met it was always one of the exciting games of the season. The visiting team would usually bring a large amount of fans and typically the matchup would end up being one of the largest attended games in the basketball season for both schools. Three of the top 8 crowds in the history of the Mini Dome were against Appalachian State. This game from 1991 was no different. This video is from the 1991 season in a sold out game of over 8,000 inside the old Varsity Gym in Boone, North Carolina. Of course this is the 1991 team featuring Mister Jennings, almost every Southern Conference game for ETSU that season, home or away, was a sellout crowd. Complete video footage between ETSU and NC State in 1992. It’s not the most well known ETSU and NC State basketball game for buc fans but it was still another win for the Bucs over the Wolfpack. A year after the big win in Johnson City the ETSU men’s basketball team visited Raleigh for a second game inside Reynolds Coliseum. The Bucs started out slow but had a strong 2nd half to get the win over Les Robinson and the Wolfpack. This game marked the 3rd year in a row ETSU beat NC State in basketball. The two have not played since this game. See more ETSU basketball games in the video section.
This short highlight reel of Lester Wilson comes from one of our readers who provided me the video. This video showcases Lester’s tremendous athletic ability with some outstanding dunks and blocks during a Carter HS game. I’m certainly excited about seeing Lester Wilson in an ETSU uniform after watching this and other previously posted videos of Lester.
Zakee Wadood and Jerald Fields are two of the most memorable players that have ever played for the East Tennessee State basketball team. There is no doubt without these guys the 2003 and 2004 Southern Conference championships probably would not have been possible. This 7 minute highlight film showcases what Zakee and Jerald were most famous for at ETSU, which was blocking shots, dunking and winning.
Perhaps one of the biggest wins of ETSU basketball history came in the 1992 NCAA tournament when the Bucs faced Arizona in the first round. ETSU shot extremely well in this game, hitting a total of 13 3-point shots. It’s one of the most impressive wins a 14th seed has ever had over a 3rd seed in NCAA tournament history. Calvin Talford is a Buccanner favorite and will always be known to East Tennessee State fans as one of the most exciting players to ever put on a Buccaneer uniform. Not only did Calvin Talford amaze Buccaneer fans, with his unreal slam dunks, during his time at ETSU but he also amazed the entire college basketball nation when he won the 1992 NCAA Slam Dunk contest in front of a national TV audience on ESPN. The video below shows all 5 of Calvin’s dunks, including his final dunk.
